Tragic Discovery in Goa: Tiger Found Dead in Sacorda Forests; Poaching Suspected

Date:

SACORDA, GOA – The serene landscape of Goa’s Western Ghats has been shaken by the discovery of an adult tiger found dead in the forests of Sacorda, within the Dharbandora region. The incident, which came to light on Saturday, May 2, 2026, has ignited fresh concerns regarding wildlife safety and the urgent need for enhanced legal protections for the state’s apex predators.

The carcass was discovered in a highly decomposed state at a location known as Aalot, situated in a private forest area just a few meters from the boundaries of the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary.

Suspicions of Poaching Surface

While an official post-mortem report is awaited to confirm the exact cause of death, preliminary observations by forest officials and local environmentalists have raised immediate red flags. According to reports, the tiger was found with its teeth and nails (claws) missing.

The absence of these specific body parts—highly valued in the illegal international wildlife trade—strongly suggests poaching.

Renowned environmentalist Rajendra Kerkar, who visited the site, expressed deep grief and noted that this marks the sixth tiger death reported in the state over the last 17 years. Kerkar emphasized that such incidents underscore the reality of a resident tiger population in Goa, countering long-standing claims that the animals are merely “transient” visitors from neighboring states.

A History of Human-Wildlife Conflict

This latest tragedy mirrors a grim history of tiger fatalities in the region:

  • 2009: A tiger was found killed in a trap.
  • 2020: A family of five tigers—an adult female and four grown cubs—were found poisoned to death in the Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary.
  • 2026: The current discovery in Sacorda adds to the growing tally of preventable wildlife losses.

The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) has previously warned that without upgrading the legal status of Goa’s protected areas, the state risks becoming a “death trap” for tigers dispersing across the Western Ghats landscape.

Renewed Calls for a Tiger Reserve

The death has reignited a fierce debate over the declaration of a Tiger Reserve in Goa. For years, the NTCA and environmental groups like the Goa Foundation have pushed for a reserve spanning approximately 750 square kilometers, including the Mhadei, Bhagwan Mahavir, Netravali, and Cotigao wildlife sanctuaries.

The Legal Battle

  • July 2023: The Bombay High Court at Goa directed the state government to notify a tiger reserve within three months, criticizing the “steadfast avoidance” of the recommendation.
  • Present Day: The Goa government has challenged this directive in the Supreme Court, citing concerns over the impact on nearly 100,000 residents living within the proposed boundaries and arguing that the state serves only as a “transit corridor.”

Conservationists argue that a Tiger Reserve status would bring much-needed technical, financial, and monitoring support from the NTCA, including more anti-poaching camps and specialized forest guards.

The Path Forward

As the forest department awaits the results of the autopsy conducted by a three-doctor veterinary team, the pressure is mounting on the state to take decisive action.

The Western Ghats of Goa are part of a unique ecological complex that holds the world’s largest tiger population. Protecting this corridor is not just about saving a single species, but about preserving the integrity of a vital ecosystem that supports biodiversity, water security, and the climate health of the entire region.

The investigation continues, and authorities are expected to provide further details on whether a criminal case will be registered under the Wildlife Protection Act.
