Massive Fire Devastates Luxury Resort Near Goa’s Ajoba Temple; Property Worth Crores Reduced to Ashes

Date:

Ashwem, North Goa – A catastrophic fire tore through the Dallas Beach Resort in the Ashwem-Mandrem area of North Goa on Thursday night, obliterating several luxury cottages. The blaze, which erupted near the historic Ajoba Temple, sent massive plumes of black smoke into the sky, visible from kilometers away, and has resulted in property damage estimated to be in the range of several crores.

While the structural loss is immense, authorities have confirmed a miraculous escape for everyone involved, with no fatalities or injuries reported.

A Night of Chaos in Ashwem

The fire reportedly began around 8:45 PM on April 16, 2026. Witnesses described a terrifying scene as the flames caught hold of the resort’s high-end cottages. Because the structures were primarily constructed of seasoned wood, plywood flooring, and synthetic fixtures, the fire spread with localized ferocity, jumping from one unit to the next within minutes.

At the time the blaze started, at least three of the resort’s twelve cottages were occupied by tourists. Fortunately, guests noticed the smoke early and were able to evacuate the premises immediately. Local residents and resort staff were the first responders, using sand and small water pumps in a desperate attempt to contain the inferno before professional help could arrive.

Response and Investigation

Fire tenders from the Pernem and Mapusa fire stations were dispatched to the scene. However, by the time the heavy machinery arrived, the highly combustible materials of the “luxury eco-stay” had already fueled a massive conflagration. Firefighters battled for several hours to prevent the flames from spreading to the nearby Ajoba Temple and other neighboring properties.

Preliminary investigations by the Directorate of Fire and Emergency Services point toward a technical failure. It is suspected that a short circuit in the resort’s generator set may have sparked the initial flame. A formal panchanama is currently underway to determine the exact cause and the total financial impact of the destruction.

Growing Concerns Over Safety and Infrastructure

The incident has reignited a fierce debate regarding fire safety and emergency response infrastructure in Goa’s rapidly developing coastal belts. This marks the second major fire in the Pernem coastal area this month, following a similar blaze that destroyed seven beachfront restaurants in Arambol on April 4.

Key Issues Raised by the Incident:

  • Response Delays: Locals expressed frustration over the time it took for fire services to reach the remote beach area, highlighting the need for a dedicated fire station closer to the Ashwem-Mandrem tourist hub.
  • Flammable Materials: The use of wood and plastic in “luxury” eco-cottages has come under scrutiny, as these materials offer little resistance to fire.
  • Legal Controversies: Reports have emerged that the resort was previously embroiled in a legal dispute. Local panchayats had reportedly issued demolition orders in the past, alleging the cottages were built without proper clearances from the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA).

Impact on Tourism

The Mandrem MLA, Jit Arolkar, visited the site and coordinated with local authorities to ensure the safety of the evacuated guests. While the physical structures can be rebuilt, the recurring nature of these fires is causing concern among stakeholders in Goa’s tourism industry.

As the smoke clears, the Goa government is under increasing pressure to conduct stringent fire safety audits across all temporary and permanent wooden resorts along the coastline to ensure that such a near-miss does not turn into a future tragedy.
