Goa CM Pramod Sawant Inaugurates New Directorate of Transport Premises in Porvorim: A Leap Toward Modern Governance

Date:

PORVORIM, GOA — In a significant move to modernize administrative infrastructure and enhance citizen services, Goa Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant officially inaugurated the new head office premises of the Directorate of Transport on Wednesday evening. The state-of-the-art facility, located at Building B-1, 1st Floor of the New Market Complex in Porvorim, marks a major milestone in the government’s mission to provide faster, more transparent, and tech-driven public services.

The inauguration ceremony saw the presence of high-ranking officials, including Minister for Transport Shri Mauvin Godinho, Secretary (Transport) Shri Mahesh Kumar Shambhu, and Director of Transport Shri P. Pravimal Abhishek. The event was not just a symbolic ribbon-cutting but a showcase of the state’s rapid digital transformation within the transport sector.

Modernizing Public Service Delivery

Speaking at the event, Chief Minister Sawant highlighted that the relocation to a more modern and spacious facility is central to improving the working environment for staff, which directly translates to better service for the public. The new office is equipped with advanced technological infrastructure designed to handle the increasing volume of transport-related applications with greater efficiency.

The Chief Minister also revealed that the state government has already achieved significant success in digitizing 49 transport department services. These services are now Aadhaar-enabled, allowing citizens to complete most of their paperwork online without the need for multiple physical visits to the office.

Safety and Skill Development: The 4,700-Driver Milestone

A key highlight of the Chief Minister’s address was the focus on road safety and human resource development. Dr. Sawant announced that the state government has successfully trained 4,700 drivers under a specialized refresher training program. This initiative is aimed at reducing the rate of road accidents in Goa by instilling better driving habits and awareness of modern safety protocols.

In addition to safety initiatives, the government is also providing financial support to the transport sector. The CM confirmed that fuel subsidies have already been released to 1,200 buses, providing much-needed relief to private bus operators and ensuring the continuity of public transport services across the state.

Future Infrastructure: Bus Stands and Scrappage Policy

The inauguration served as a platform for the Chief Minister to outline the future roadmap for Goa’s transport infrastructure. Several major projects are currently in the pipeline:

  • New Bus Stands: Plans are underway to construct new, modern bus stands in Mapusa and Margao under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
  • Bicholim Facility: The new bus stand at Bicholim is nearing completion and is expected to be inaugurated shortly.
  • Vehicle Scrappage Policy: The CM urged the private sector to actively participate in the government’s newly implemented scrappage policy. He noted that moving toward newer, more fuel-efficient vehicles would not only help the environment but also offer financial benefits to owners through government incentives.

Enhancing Connectivity and Efficiency

Minister Mauvin Godinho also addressed the gathering, emphasizing that the Directorate of Transport is the backbone of Goa’s mobility. He noted that the integration of the Vahan and Sarathi platforms has already revolutionized how vehicle registrations and driving licenses are handled. The new Porvorim office will act as the nerve center for these digital operations, housing a specialized Command and Control Centre for real-time monitoring and enforcement.

The shift to the New Market Complex is expected to reduce the congestion often seen at older administrative buildings, providing a more professional and accessible environment for the thousands of Goans who interact with the transport department daily.

As Goa continues its journey toward becoming a “Viksit Goa” (Developed Goa), the inauguration of this new facility stands as a clear indicator of the government’s focus on infrastructure, digital literacy, and public welfare.
