Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday inaugurated the newly redeveloped Hutatma Smruti Smarak at Patradevi, a historic site associated with Goa’s liberation struggle against Portuguese rule. During the inauguration, Singh paid tribute to the satyagrahis who lost their lives during the movement.
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and Union Minister of State for Power and New & Renewable Energy Shripad Y. Naik were also present at the event.
The redevelopment of the memorial aims to preserve the history of Goa’s liberation struggle and provide visitors, particularly younger generations, with a space to learn about the sacrifices made during the movement.
Addressing the gathering, Rajnath Singh said the Goa Liberation movement was not merely a regional struggle but reflected India’s broader national consciousness and unity.
He paid tribute to several satyagrahis, including Karnail Singh from Punjab, Sahodra Devi from Madhya Pradesh and Madhukar Damodar Chaudhary from Maharashtra.
Singh emphasised that national unity must remain above regional, communal and caste-based divisions. He said Patradevi carries a powerful message that despite India’s diverse regional, social and cultural identities, the idea of being Indian remains a common bond.
The Defence Minister also highlighted the peaceful nature of the satyagrahis’ efforts while stressing that a sovereign nation has the right to employ its full strength when its territorial integrity is threatened and peaceful avenues have been exhausted.
Singh Recalls Operation Vijay and Goa’s Liberation
Recalling the liberation of Goa through Operation Vijay in 1961, Singh praised the professionalism, courage and discipline demonstrated by the Indian armed forces.
He said the confidence displayed by the armed forces during the operation established a tradition that continues to influence India’s defence preparedness.
Referring to Operation Sindoor, Singh said the operation demonstrated the capability of India’s defence forces to respond effectively to threats against the country’s security.
He stressed that the legacy of Goa’s liberation should serve as a continuing reminder of the need for India’s armed forces to remain vigilant, capable and prepared to protect the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
India Emerging as a Defence Manufacturing Power
Singh also highlighted India’s transformation in defence capabilities since the liberation of Goa.
He said the Indian armed forces now operate advanced platforms and technologies, including warships, fighter aircraft, sophisticated radar systems, network-centric warfare capabilities and long-range air power.
According to Singh, the three services are also moving towards greater jointness and integration, while India’s domestic defence industrial ecosystem continues to expand.
The Defence Minister stated that India’s defence exports, which were around Rs 600 crore before 2014, have now crossed Rs 38,000 crore. He added that defence production has increased from approximately Rs 40,000 crore to a record Rs 1.81 lakh crore.
Singh further emphasised India’s efforts to strengthen indigenous defence capabilities and transition from being a major defence importer towards becoming a significant global defence manufacturing and exporting nation.
The Goa government undertook the redevelopment of the Hutatma Smruti Smarak through the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation at an estimated cost of Rs 9.50 crore.
The renovated memorial has been designed as an immersive educational and commemorative space. It includes a redesigned central monument, sculptural installations, information hubs and murals depicting the history of Goa’s liberation struggle.
Youth Urged to Remember Goa Liberation History
Singh urged younger generations to understand the sacrifices made during India’s freedom struggle and the Goa Liberation movement.
He said freedom involves not only the right to express oneself but also responsibilities such as preserving national unity, respecting constitutional values, obeying the law and placing national interests above personal gains.
He called upon young people visiting Goa to visit the memorial and learn about the sacrifices of those who fought for the country’s integrity.
Singh stressed that the stories of the martyrs of Patradevi should not remain merely names and dates in history books, highlighting the importance of understanding the past while shaping the future.
