Parvesh Verma Targets Arvind Kejriwal Over Residence, Calls It ‘Sheesh Mahal’

Date:

NEW DELHI — Delhi Minister Parvesh Verma on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal over his official residence, alleging that it reflects luxury inconsistent with claims of simplicity.

Speaking in Delhi, Verma questioned the nature of the residence, stating, “Looking at this house, does it seem like an ordinary person’s house?” He further referred to what he described as Kejriwal’s bedroom, claiming that it resembles a “seven-star hotel suite in Goa.”

The Minister also used the term “Sheesh Mahal” to describe the property located at 95 Lodhi Estate, suggesting that the residence is excessively lavish. The remarks form part of an ongoing political exchange between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Aam Aadmi Party over governance, transparency, and the use of public resources.

Verma alleged that the residence stands in contrast to the public image projected by Kejriwal and his party, which has often emphasised simplicity and anti-corruption principles. According to him, such developments raise questions about the use of government funds and priorities in public spending.

The comments come amid continued political tensions between the BJP and AAP, with both parties frequently criticising each other on governance-related issues. The BJP has repeatedly raised concerns about alleged irregularities and decisions taken during Kejriwal’s tenure as Chief Minister.

On the other hand, leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party have, in the past, defended their governance record, highlighting initiatives in education, healthcare, and public services. The party has also dismissed allegations related to the residence, terming them politically motivated.

Observers note that the issue of official residences and government spending often becomes a contentious political topic, particularly when it involves high-profile leaders. Such debates are typically used by political parties to question each other’s credibility and commitment to public welfare.

Verma’s remarks are likely to intensify the ongoing political discourse in Delhi, especially as both parties continue to engage in public and verbal exchanges over governance and accountability.

He further implied that the matter goes beyond aesthetics, suggesting that it reflects broader concerns about how public resources are utilised. However, no specific financial details were cited during his statement.

The controversy surrounding the residence has periodically resurfaced in political debates, with critics referring to it as an example of alleged extravagance, while supporters argue that official residences are maintained as per administrative norms.

Political analysts believe that such statements are part of a broader strategy to shape public perception and influence political narratives, especially in a highly competitive political environment like Delhi.

As of now, there has been no immediate response from Aam Aadmi Party leaders regarding Verma’s latest remarks.

The statement underscores the continuing political friction between the BJP and AAP, with issues of governance, transparency, and public expenditure remaining central to their ongoing confrontation.
